Lively whole-group communicative language learning game, perfect for practising, reinforcing & refreshing a range of fruits in French. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too - particularly with silent s, the audible sound of x (deux and dix for example) and so on. I point out particular phonemes and sounds too, such as***ei in groseilles*** and the soft c in citrons . The aim of the game is to create a French sentence chain as quickly as possible. The game works well if the sentence sequence is placed on the floor, a longish table, or other flat surface. The design is four cards per page, which allows for a large font - this is really important for beginner language learners who are familiar with the written word, and starting to***link spelling with sound***. There are 29 fruits featured in the game: green apple; red apple; banana; cherry; date; fig; gooseberries; grapefruit; green grapes; red grapes; honeydew melon; kiwi; lemon; lime; mango; nectarine; olive; orange; papaya; peach; pear; pineapple; pumpkin; raspberry; redcurrants; rhubarb; starfruit; strawberry; watermelon. All the fruits may not be in my longer-term learning plan, but the learning objective moves beyond simply learning individual units of vocabulary - the images help students***infer meaning from context***, supported by the visual prompts and clues - this in turn supports them in developing their French language skills in the longer and more complex sentences. There is implicit input on grammatical concepts such as adjectival agreement, gender, definite, indefinite and partitive articles and position of adjectives, either preceding or proceeding the particular noun. This is a very successful way of really getting the most of what looks like a straightforward game for consolidating the target vocabulary - it is actually so much more! The question card template provides an additional learning activity, with students applying their developing French language knowledge creatively and practically, as they make game cards for the class - this is a really popular activity with my students. Please read the Terms of Use. A whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, perfect for regular use in the run-up to Christmas. It’s great to learn some French Christmas vocabulary, though I don’t expect my learners to learn all the words necessarily - it’s equally important to introduce learners to different traditions and practices through the images, and develop their general French language skills confidently and happily. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. Learners walk around, talking to each other and working together to create the chain. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. The aim of the game is to create an alphabetical word chain - this can either be a ‘human’ chain, though I prefer to have learners work together to create an alphabetical line on a table, or even on the floor. There are 32 French Christmas words, arranged alphabetically. The first and last cards have J’ai la première carte and J’ai la dernière carte written on them. If you have fewer than thirty-two learners in your group, randomly select several to have more than one card. Learners love it when you play too! The words are all definite article, masculine and feminine, with singular and plural - this also offers a useful opportunity to talk about grammatical concepts if your learners are at that particular stage. Try to laminate the cards if you can - they’re far more learner-friendly, and they do last for absolutely years! Learners can also apply their language skills very practically (and artistically!) by creating their own cards on the template. We tend to play against a timer, often in teams (you’ll need a couple of sets for this) - learners really enjoy trying to beat their own record! These Spanish Christmas Numbers 0-31 challenge cards are perfect for Primary Spanish and KS3 Spanish learners, and really do help to create a lively language learning environment. I’ve found that lessons around the Christmas period are a great time for revisiting and practising language and structures we’ve looked at over the term. The questions are entirely in Spanish, and students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their developing knowledge of Spanish in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling in Spanish in general, and certainly in Spanish numbers and Spanish Christmas vocabulary in particular. The questions range in complexity and challenge, not only in terms of calculation, but also in terms of the level of Spanish - they are aimed at advanced beginner Spanish learners, rather than new or recent beginners. Most learners will be able to infer meaning from context and images, which have a real Spanish Christmas theme, such as el turrón and las uvas, with vocabulary and structures repeated throughout, giving learners a chance to familiarize themselves really well with them. Nonetheless, it can be useful to read through the questions with the whole class first to check everyone is able to access the language, and therefore the activity, successfully. Students really do benefit in terms of language learning if they have regular and frequent opportunities to work with the cards, rather than simply working with them in a single lesson. The Spanish Christmas vocabulary provides a really useful springboard for discussion about Christmas customs and traditions in Spain, Spanish regions, and other Spanish-speaking countries too, comparing and contrasting these to other Christmas practices students may know. An instant introduction to Europe really brightening up the learning environment showing European countries, capital cities and flags. The bunting creates a great multicultural look and feel. I t’s an ideal display for the annual***European Day of Languages and Europe Day festivals***, and great as a year-round display resource. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the bunting does help students develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Europe and its geography. I’ve also included a range of islands, such as the Faroe Islands, to extend students’ knowledge of Europe a little further, as well as several countries, for example Armenia, that are often classed as belonging either to Europe or to Asia. Each bunting banner has a small tag which I use to hang with a clip from a***washing line*** across the classroom and other learning areas - alphabetically works well, though non-alphabetically is perfect for a country quest activity. Laminate if you can - there’s a lot of prep, and certainly the bunting will use a lot of ink, but laminated the bunting will remain in excellent condition for years. Perfect for developing knowledge and locational understanding of Europe the game cards provide great learning opportunities for any appropriate age group, at any time of the school year, but they are particularly popular on the annual European Day of Languages. Students can develop their knowledge of the geography of Europe, its countries, capital and flag in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. There are 60 flag cards, and 60 country with capital city cards, featuring all European countries, capital cities and flags. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the games help them fully develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Europe. I’ve also included a range of islands, such as the Faroe Islands, to extend students’ knowledge of Europe a little further, as well as several countries, for example Armenia, that are often classed as belonging either to Europe or to Asia. Playing in teams against a timer is really popular - students love to see if they can beat their own time record. There is a country, capital city and flag reference list of all countries and capitals, which students find useful to read through before playing - allow them only 60 seconds on a timer to really focus their reading and increase the sense of competition if you are playing competitive team games! It can also be used as a year-round reference resource, which students can file in their workbooks or learning folders. There is also a full set of country and capital labels - labelling the flags with their respective countries and capitals is a really good way of consolidating learning. Laminate the cards, labels and reference sheets if you can - it’s definitely a lot of prep, but it’s well worth it, as not only are the materials far more learner-friendly, they also last for absolutely years. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. The quiz features 100 multiple-choice questions, each with four possible responses. It’s perfect for developing students’ awareness, understanding and knowledge of all things European. The questions range from basic general knowledge to more specialised factual knowledge. The themes and topics are: = arts & culture = famous people = food = geography = history = landmarks & monuments = language = literature = music; = politics = science = society. You can be Quiz Question Captain, but students do enjoy taking on that role in turns. The questions often stimulate further and deeper discussion about particular themes and topics - for example, the question regarding Eyjafjallajökull is a great example of a ‘modern-day’ volcano eruption, and the implications for both national and international communities, particularly following the recent eruption of Cumbre Vieja on La Palma, one of the Spanish Canary Islands. I often prompt students for additional responses based on the answer options - for example The longest river in Europe, the Volga, runs through which countries? Which countries does the Danube or the Rhine run through? and so on. I always award extra points for this, which increases the competitive edge a little. The quiz is non-editable for copyright reasons. The first slide shows a map of Europe, which I use to discuss general geography and the range of European countries, some of which students may not be aware of. Each question slide is followed by a corresponding answer slide, with the correct response in capital letters. The quiz is ideal for whole-group or team quizzes, with students choosing a European-themed team name . Play in homeroom / form time or in any subject area lesson as a brain-break - the questions really are cross-curricular! I use the quiz several times at intervals across the school year - this really does put students’ memory and developing knowledge to the test. The quiz goes down particularly well on the European Day of Languages, and at key points in the school year: end of year, back to school, Christmas and so on. Each country is presented individually with its capital city and flag - as you show the slides, encourage students to shout out the country names as they appear - this tends to aid memory quite considerably - I point out the location of each country on the background map, which helps students situate each country within the continent, and visualizing the location of the countries again aids memory. Students can develop their knowledge of the geography of Europe in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. We play both as a whole-group team quiz, and in pairs or small groups on a regular basis - students are particularly keen to see if they can beat their own points record, and are really motivated by their developing knowledge. The set contains all European countries and capital cities, including some island communities such as the Faroe Islands and Guernsey. Each question has 4 answers to choose from. The correct answer is given in capital letters. The quiz cards are numbered, but questions can be asked in random order too: simply place all the cards in a bowl, box or tin, and work your way through. There are two quiz challenges: Challenge 1 gives the country as a prompt, with four possible capital cities to choose from. Challenge 2 gives the capital city as a prompt, with four possible countries to choose from. The card numbers for Challenge 1 are in the top right-hand corner; Challenge 2 in the top left-hand corner so that the cards can be organised and sorted easily. Laminate the cards if possible: they’re more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years. Before playing, it’s useful to show students a map of Europe, so that they can visualize the location of each country and capital city, not only as an individual location with Europe, but also as a location in relation to other European countries and capital cities. It’s easy to create and instant introduction to Les pays francophones with this word wall showing a range of world countries and territories where French is an official language and / or very widely-spoken. Each card shows the continent, country and capital city in French, and its national flag, and together they give the classroom a great multicultural look and feel. At the same time, the word wall promotes French as a living language, spoken across the globe, and featuring in the everyday life of your learning environment. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. This is a whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, perfect for regular use in the run-up to Christmas. I created it for the EFL / ESL classroom, and it works really well for learners across a broad spectrum of ages and stages of learning. It’s great to learn some English Christmas vocabulary, though I don’t expect my language learners to learn all of them, as the goals of the game are about speaking, listening and reading in English, and introducing learners to different Christmas traditions and practices through the images, rather than simply building vocabulary. There’s definitely a UK-theme with some of the images, such as Christmas cracker and mince pies. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. Learners walk around, talking to each other and working together to create the chain. It’s perfect for pronunciation and reading out loud practice too. I’ve included a***whole-group presentation*** to prepare learners for the words in the game, and I also use it to talk about Christmas traditions we know, in the UK and beyond. The aim of the game is to create an alphabetical word chain, with a couple of cards slightly out of order to keep learners on their toes! This can either be a ‘human’ chain, though having learners work together to create an alphabetical line on a table, or even on the floor works really well too. There are 32 Christmas cards, so perfect for very large groups. With smaller groups, some players can simply have two cards, or select another card when they have already placed their first card in the chain. The first and last cards have I have the first card and It’s the last card - Happy Christmas written on them. Learners love it when you play too! I use the presentation to work on pronunciation, and to embed vocabulary a little more - it’s great for spelling games and quizzes too. Laminate the cards if you can - they’re far more learner-friendly, and you’ll be able to use them for years to come! There are 5 resources, each for £1, featuring active, differentiated, multi-skill and independent learning activities. Some of the resources overlap various learning stages, though I’ve found that students, regardless of age or stage, often benefit from, and genuinely enjoy, working with activities that are primarily designed for other ability or knowledge stages. This may be either as practice and revision, or as additional or more accessible and manageable challenge. These factors are all key to motivating learners to engage with, and progress in, a new language. There’s certainly prep work involved with some of the resources – I always laminate my language and task cards for example, as they’re much more easy to manipulate, and so far more learner-friendly. They do however last in excellent condition for years, so for me, laminating is definitely worth the prep time and extra expense. You don’t have to prepare them all at once – the resources are definitely useful for the longer-term, so you can take your time with the prep, focusing on what you’re working with at any specific stage.
